Back pain causes 13 million working days to be lost in Britain each year.
Back pain is very common. The spine supports the whole weight of the upper body, so it is understandable that it sometimes goes wrong. Because of the complex nature of the spine it is advisable to take medical advice from the doctor or triage nurse if back pain persists more than a few days.
If, as is usual, the pain has been brought on by heavy lifting, be sensible and take things easy. Take ibuprofen, with or without paracetamol, which will not only relieve the pain but help to relieve inflammation.
The pharmacist can often help by recommending a useful combination of painkillers. Some of the painkillers may be available on prescriptions. However it is recommended that you take enough painkillers to keep comfortable and keep moving. Treatment such as a hot water bottle, heat lamp or standing under a hot shower can also help.
